EU Urges Suspension of Trade Preferences with Israel Amid Gaza Conflict
The European Commission has called on its member states to suspend trade concessions with Israel in response to the ongoing war in Gaza. The move reflects growing pressure within Europe over Israel’s military actions and their humanitarian consequences.

According to international media reports, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas urged member states to consider imposing additional tariffs on certain Israeli goods. She also appealed for sanctions against Israeli settler groups as well as far-right ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich.

The Commission stressed that Israel’s actions amount to violations of Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which binds both parties to respect human rights and democratic principles. Officials pointed to worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza, restrictions on aid, intensified military operations, and the approval of the controversial E1 settlement plan in the West Bank as grounds for action.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reiterated calls for an immediate ceasefire, unrestricted access for humanitarian aid, and the release of hostages. She emphasised that bilateral cooperation with Israel could not continue under the present circumstances.

Despite the Commission’s stance, divisions remain among EU member states. Spain and Ireland have expressed strong support for economic and arms embargoes, while Germany and Hungary oppose such measures.

The proposal comes at a time when widespread protests across Europe are demanding tougher action against Israel. On Tuesday, a UN report further escalated the debate by describing Israeli military operations in Gaza as “genocidal”.
